Buying a golf cart

How much does a new golf cart cost?

New golf carts at Golfcarts-Sales currently range from about $9,995 to $21,995. Most 4-passenger lithium carts sell for roughly $10,000 to $13,000, 6-passenger models run higher, and premium street-legal models like the Garia Street Legal sit at the top of the range. Every cart in our shop shows its price up front.

Should I buy a gas or electric golf cart?

For most neighborhoods, electric is the better choice: it is quiet, has no fumes and needs little maintenance. Gas makes sense if you drive long distances in a day, have a large property or lack easy access to charging. Read our gas vs. electric guide.

Is a lithium battery worth it?

For most owners, yes. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are rated at 2,000 or more charge cycles, versus a few hundred for deep-cycle lead-acid, according to Battery University. They also need no watering, charge faster and weigh less. See our battery guide.

What size golf cart do I need?

A 4-passenger cart fits most families. Choose 2 seats for couples, golf and small garages, or 6 seats for larger families, rentals and moving groups. Measure your garage before you buy. Read how to choose the right size.

What is the difference between a lifted and a standard golf cart?

A lifted cart has extra ground clearance and larger tires for grass, gravel, sand and trails. A standard-height cart is easier to step into and rides more smoothly on pavement. Browse our lifted carts.

What brands do you sell?

We sell ICON, EPIC, Club Car, Edge EV and Garia golf carts, in electric, gas and street-legal models.

Street-legal carts and New York rules

Are golf carts street legal in New York?

A standard golf cart is not a road vehicle. To drive on public roads in New York, you need a low-speed vehicle (LSV): New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 121-f defines an LSV as a vehicle with a top speed above 20 mph and no more than 25 mph that meets federal safety standard FMVSS 500 (NY VTL § 121-f). LSVs must be registered and insured, and your village or town must allow them on its roads. Read our full guide.

What is the difference between a golf cart and an LSV?

An LSV is a federally regulated class of vehicle capped at 25 mph that must have headlights, turn signals, mirrors, a parking brake, a DOT windshield, a VIN and seat belts, under 49 CFR 571.500. A standard golf cart does not have to meet that standard and is meant for private property, courses and paths.

How do I register a street-legal golf cart (LSV) in New York?

LSVs are registered and insured through the New York DMV, like other motor vehicles. Bring the vehicle’s title documents, such as the manufacturer’s certificate of origin (MSO), and proof of insurance, and confirm current requirements with the DMV before you go.

Can I drive a golf cart on Long Island roads?

Only if it is a compliant, registered and insured LSV and your village or town allows LSVs on that road. Rules differ between communities, so check with your local village or town before you buy.

Performance, charging and care

How fast does a golf cart go?

Most new golf carts reach about 19 to 25 mph. Federal rules cap street-legal LSVs at 25 mph. For example, ICON lists its G40 gas cart at 19 to 24 mph (ICON).

How far can an electric golf cart go on one charge?

Range depends on the battery size, terrain, temperature, speed and load, so it varies by model. Check each cart’s specifications, or ask us about a specific model. Neighborhood trips are usually well within a single charge.

How long does it take to charge a golf cart?

Lithium batteries charge noticeably faster than lead-acid. A full charge on a lead-acid battery typically takes 14 to 16 hours, according to Battery University. Most owners simply plug in overnight.

How long does a golf cart battery last?

It depends on the chemistry and how you use it. LiFePO4 lithium batteries are rated at 2,000 or more cycles, while deep-cycle lead-acid batteries typically last a few hundred cycles (Battery University). Keeping a battery charged and stored properly extends its life.

Can I use or store a golf cart in winter?

Yes. Store the cart in a garage or covered space when you can, keep the battery charged, and follow the manufacturer’s guidance on charging in freezing temperatures, explained by Battery University.

Are golf carts safe for children?

Golf carts can be safe with good habits. A national study by Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that falling or jumping from a moving cart was the most common cause of injury. Keep everyone seated and belted, use a licensed driver, and avoid carrying young children. See our family safety tips.
